Safety in Rwanda and Uganda

Many people have a wrong idea about the safety in Rwanda and Uganda. They are one of the safest countries in East Africa to travel in today.

  • Serious crime or hostility aimed specifically at travellers is very rare. As the government is very protective of tourists, it is perfectly possible to travel alone, hike from village to village (e.g. the Congo Nile Trail) and go camping.
  • Kigali is a genuine contender for the safest capital in Africa, but like every big city it is better not to walk alone by night. This can not be said about Kampala. Although Kampala is generally safe, it can be a bit dodgy and it is better to ask at your accommodation before going somewhere, especially by night.
